Two groups, one simple split

In Eight Mansions Feng Shui, every Kua Number belongs to one of two groups: East Group or West Group. The group determines which four compass directions are generally considered supportive for you, and which four are considered your directions to approach more mindfully.

  • East Group: Kua 1, 3, 4, and 9
  • West Group: Kua 2, 6, 7, and 8

There's no "better" group. Each one simply points toward a different set of directions, and the goal either way is the same: use the directions as a gentle layout prompt for your bedroom, desk, or favorite corner of the home.

East Group directions

East Group profiles (Kua 1, 3, 4, and 9) are generally guided toward East, Southeast, South, and North. If you're in this group, read your specific guide for the exact direction tied to each life aspect: Kua 1, Kua 3, Kua 4, or Kua 9.

West Group directions

West Group profiles (Kua 2, 6, 7, and 8) are generally guided toward West, Northeast, Northwest, and Southwest. Read your specific guide here: Kua 2, Kua 6, Kua 7, or Kua 8.

What about Kua 5?

Kua 5 doesn't belong to either group directly. In Eight Mansions Feng Shui, a Kua 5 result is folded into Kua 2 for female calculations and Kua 8 for male calculations — both West Group numbers. If your calculator result showed Kua 5, read your Kua 2 guide or Kua 8 guide depending on which one applies to you.

Using your group at home

Whichever group you belong to, the same modern principle applies: your supportive directions are a starting point for bedroom and desk orientation, not a strict rulebook. Small, renter-friendly adjustments — angling a desk, softening a window, repositioning a lamp — tend to matter more day-to-day than a perfect compass reading.
